Tissue Culture Seedlings

Technology

Tissue Culture

Tissue culture is a biotechnological technique used widely to produce plantlets in a sterile environment. In plant tissue culture, plant tissue is exposed to various chemicals under controlled growth conditions to induce regeneration of plantlets, in a process called micropropagation. The prefix, “micro-”, means a small piece of tissue. Through this small piece of tissue, plantlets can be regenerated rapidly by a few orders of magnitude as compared to seed germination or stem cutting.

Seedlings micropropagated through this manner will be identical to its mother plant, where the tissue originates from. This is the means to preserve the high qualities exhibited in the mother plant. Unlike seed germinated plantlets, tissue culture seedlings do not have the complications of growth irregularity and yield irregularity commonly found in seed germinated plantlets.

The Advantages of Tissue Culture Seedlings

The qualities and specifications of tissue cultured seedlings will depend on the mother plant. Mother plant is selected based on its yields, growth rate and its suitability to the climate and soil conditions at its intended plantation site.
