Crack Detection by Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI)

MPI uses magnetic fields and small magnetic particles, such as iron filings to detect flaws in components. It is, therefore, suitable for products made from ferromagnetic materials such as iron, steel, nickel, cobalt or some of their alloys.

The product under test may be magnetised in two ways:-

The first uses a magnetising coil or a magnetic yoke. The field produced is a Longitudinal field in which transverse cracks can be detected as they distort the magnetic field.

The second uses a current through the material. This may be either dc or ac and produces a Transverse field in which longitudinal cracks are detected.
