Traffic prioritisation 'avoids VoIP QoS issues'

02-08-2010

Those using VoIP for business could resolve any quality of service (QoS) issues by implementing traffic management and prioritisation methods, it has been suggested.

Writing on searchnetworking.techtarget.com.au, Tom Nolle said that the usual way to alleviate QoS problems is to augment network capacity to reduce congestion, but added that this is not always the best way to rectify the situation.

"You may need to prioritise your VoIP traffic. Prioritisation will let the traffic move to the head of the queue at any point where traffic is backed up, so the key to prioritisation is to know where the backups are happening," he explained.

Mr Nolle also said that companies will need to implement technologies which allow their networks to identify VoIP traffic and then apply rules that make sure this data is given priority.

Earlier this month, Global Sources claimed that the popularity of VoIP phones is being driven by a range of factors, such as the devices' use of multimedia functions, wireless connectivity and new operating systems.
